Xbox gamer dies from blood clot after playing too long

Doctors have warned about the health effects of sitting for too long. And now one young video gamer has died from that very thing.

The family 20-year-old Chris Staniforth launched a campaign to raise awareness about the health risks of playing online computer games after their son died following a marathon session on his Xbox.

Staniforth was offered a position to study Game Design at Leicester University and would spend up to 12 hours playing his Xbox. He suffered a pulmonary embolism, which can happen after someone sits in the same position for several hours.

Deep vein thrombosis typically happens to passengers on long flights, who sit for extended periods of time without getting up and stretching or moving around.

Staniforth had no underlying medical conditions. Throughout Asia reports of gamers collapsing after spending 15 hours in front of video games are common. A South Korean gamer died in 2005 after playing online games for three days without taking a break.

Microsoft, the makers of Xbox, say they recommend gamers take breaks to exercise as well as "make time for other pursuits."

Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta says deep vein thrombosis (DVT) involves a blood clot in a vein, usually in the lower leg or thigh. In some cases, the clot can break off and move up into the blood vessels of the lungs, triggering a potentially fatal condition called pulmonary embolism.
